Thambipillay Award 1981
Mohd. Roslan was the recipient of the Thambipillay Award for 1981 and had excelled in games and athletics ever since he first entered the school in 1975. He first showed promise when he won the Individual Championship for Division III in only his second year in school. Roslan never looked back and went on to win the Individual Championships for Division II in 1978 and Division I in 1979 and 1980.
As a youngster in Form 1, he was already representing the school in hockey as vice-captain of the under-13 team and was also vice-captain of the under-15 team for the following two years. It was quite natural that he would one day lead the senior school team and he did it in 1979 as captain of the under-18 team.
Roslan reached the pinnacle of his hockey career when he was chosen to captain the Malacca Combined Schools hockey team in 1980, inspiring his team to victory in the M.S.S. Malaysia Hockey Tournament after the title had eluded them for the past 8 years. He also played in the under-20 and under-23 State hockey teams and was selected to attend the Junior World Cup training stint in 1979. However, he had to decline the honour due to other commitments.
The 1981 athletics season was a good one for Roslan. That year, he grabbed the gold medals for the 100m, 200m and long jump during the School Sports. Roslan also won a fair share of athletics honours at State levels. He was included in the M.S.S. Melaka athletics team in 1978 and 1980 and was the fastest schoolboy sprinter in the state the previous year. In 1981, he was again selected to represent the state in the M.S.S. Malaysia meet in Kota Baru but was forced to miss the trip.
Roslan's sporting achievements was not only limited to hockey and athletics. In fact, he is an all-rounder, representing the school in rugby and soccer in previous years. Besides being the school's hockey and athletics captain, he also holds a highly responsible post as vice-captain of the school.
The Thambipillay Award will probably be the last of the many honours the School bestowed upon him. Prior to that year, he had already won both the Sportsman and Athlete of the Year Awards for two consecutive years. The Award would probably be one which he would cherish long after he left school
