Editorial 60th Optimist
This year the 'Optimist' enters its 60th year of publication. In its long and illustrious existence, the magazine has evolved a status infinitely higher than that of an ordinary school magazine. Today it is an institution which pupils of this school have every right to be proud of.
In the words of our school motto, Meliora Hic Sequamur, the Malacca High School has always been a place for us to strive for the better. The school's capacity for achieving its dreams and aspirations is best reflected in the completion of the school's hall, a fitting culmination to nearly a decade of determined fund-raising. This was largely due to the efforts of old boys throughout the country, who, in the true spirit of the Malacca High School, gave their all for the realization of this dream. Therein, lies irrefutable proof of the school's ability to instill a sense of values and an unwavering sense of loyalty to the alma mater.
Nevertheless, let us be mindful that we continue to 'strive for better things' - that we neither rest on our laurels nor bask in the glow of past glories. Mediocrity has a way of eclipsing the memory of yesteryear's achievement. The time has come for each and every one of us to reflect on what we have contributed towards the fulfillment of the school's hopes and aspirations as a whole - how well we have upheld the ideals and traditions of the school. Let there not be the so-called 'passengers' who come with nothing to give and leave with a whole pile of certificates and nothing much else. Each and every one of us has something to give, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to the individual. We owe the school that much for the myriad opportunities that it has opened for us.
The role of the Optimist in bringing all this about is rather abstract as it is not something immediately perceivable. At first glance it may seem that the Optimist has degenerated into nothing more than a yearly report out of which only the hard, cold facts stare the reader in the eye. Indeed, it is rather unfortunate that the Optimist has ceased to be the showcase of literacy talent that it once was. Nevertheless, the Optimist still retains the capacity to play its role, through its ability to instill in the pupils a sense of belonging to the school - a tinge of pride at being able to show proof of association with this school.
It is indeed a great honour for us, the Editorial Board, to be entrusted with the task of producing this magazine. By so doing, we hope to uphold this fine tradition. We are only human, and as such we would greatly appreciate it if readers bear with us through any shortcomings present in this magazine.
