Tun Tan Siew Sin

Tun Tan Siew Sin is another outstanding 'old boy' of High School, who contributed much to the development of the nation. He held, for a long period, the key post of Minister of Finance, and helped strengthen the economy of the nation.

Tun Tan was a student in the school from 1927 to 1932. His school life gave an indication of his potential talents in administration, for he held a number of important posts viz School Captain, Editor of the school Magazine and President of the HSLA. On completion of his further studies at Raffles College, he adorned the role of lecturer; his pet topics being Malayan politics and commerce.

World War 2 saw him holding the post of Secretary of the Overseas Chinese Association; and his return to Malaya marked his appointment as Commissioner of the Malacca Municipality. Tun Tan has had an active association with the Malayan Chinese Association, holding the post of President for many years.

This notable 'old boy' was awarded the Justice of Peace by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1950; an outstanding accolade surely.

With Malaysia's attainment of independence, Tun Tan became a key figure in the government, first being appointed Minister of Commerce and Industry and then Minister of Finance. After years of dedicated service, he relinquished all governmental duties, though not totally, for he is acting as Financial Consultant to the government.

Busy though he may be, Tun Tan has not permitted his heavy responsibilities to sever his relations with his alma mater, and has been the Guest of Honor on a number of occasions in the school. A true son of the school, Tun Tan has set an example for all High School students to follow.
