WE ARE THE BEST
"We are the best", so boldly proclaims the motto of Malacca High School. Are we ? Dare MHS still lay claim to such an assertion ? Let the citations of the school's achievements attest for themselves.
In the 1996 STPM, MHS achieved 99.61% passes, a consistently excellent percentage. A total of 154 students obtained 5 principals. 12 high achievers scored the maximum of 5 A's each. They were Chua AL, Chong HL, Sharon Tay, Michele Choo, Hong SY, Yoong SL, Patricia Tan, Chia WL, Chan LF, Chan CH, Yeo KL and Teh YS.
In the SPM examinations, top scorers Chan MY and Tan SY obtained 10 A's each. The passing percentage was 85.2%
In the PMR examinations, 88% of the candidates passed all subjects and 100% were promoted to Form 4. 29 boys obtaiined the maximum number of A's, 8 of whom were hostelites.
In the 1977 Economics Quiz for the Royal Prof. Ungku Aziz Trophy, MHS's team comprising The KY, Chua KM, Marshazliyana, and Nur Ashikin did the school proud by emerging as the State champions.
MHS has no lack of talented artists, among whom Faril of Form 4 won numerous incentives for both his art works in competitions organised by the Rakan Muda and Belia & Sukan respectively.
On the literary front, Amy Chin, a prolific writer, won cash award for her essays on 'Hari Guru' and 'Dadah' respectively, besides bringing glory to the school.
For science, Pravin of Upper Six Science Beta was one out of 5 Malaysian students chosen to participate in the International Science School 1997, held recently in Australia by the organiser, the Schools of Physics, University of Sydney, Australia.
Here in Malacca High School, we strive for better things. To cultivate the musical talents of our students, we have the School Band (which had the privilege of performing at the National level) and the Junior Orchestra. MHS has been selected as one of the project schools for the Ministry's Music Programme.
In line with our national aspirations and focus on the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC), MHS is the pioneer school in Melaka to offer Computer Education as one of the subjects in Lower Six. Besides, all MHS students are taught to be computer literate, this is in order to equip them for the technology-savvy age. The Media & Resource Room is equipped with an LCD projector and most recently, connected online to the Internet. MHS has also set up a Mathematics Laboratory. Both the Pendidikan Islam Centre and the Art Room are fully multi-media-equipped. MHS, in keeping with the Smart School concept, has a tele-conferencing room. The Examination Unit has been computerised. The Counselling room is equipped with audio-visual components that represents the latest in today's technology.
In the sports arena, MHS this year has again proven itself indomitable. In rugby, the under-18 team clinched the championship trophy in both the Second Melaka Sports Meet and the MSSN Melaka; while the under-15 team captured second placing in the MSSN Melaka. Both Khairulnizam and Md. Razi represented Melaka in the MSS, Malaysia.
The hockey under-18 team proved unbeatable in the Second Melaka Sports Meet and the MSSN Melaka. Outstanding player, Chua BH, has been handpicked for the National Squad Project 2000.
The sepak-takraw under-15 team emerged victorious in the MSSN Melaka, while the under-18 team took second place. Akram and Azri represented the MSS Melaka under-18 team and went on to win the championship at the MSS, Malaysia.
Archery, recently introduced in MHS, has its pride of place in the MSS, Melaka. Wilfred, Jason, Preman and Tharmendra triumphantly brought home the challenge trophy. Watch out for the ever-earnest Wilfred who emerged champion in the 20m, 30m, and 40m events respectively. He was the runner-up in the 50m event. Undisputedly Wilfred was the champion archer in the Malacca Open while team-mate Tharmendra managed third place.
In the swimming pool, Abdul Hafez is as natural as a fish. He represented the MSSM both in Thailand and Sarawak. He clinched 2 golds and 1 bronze. In the Melaka Sports Meet, he won 2 golds and 4 bronze while Mazlan swam his way to grab 5 golds and 3 bronze. Victor won 3 bronze.
MHS's fencing team represented the MSS Malaysia in Bangkok on 17 - 24 March 1997. In the Bowling Federal Open, Kaveetesh represented the Malacca Golden Bowl. MHS's handball under-15 team won the Bukit Cina Zone Champs Trophy while the under-18 team emerged runners-up. The football under-15 team was runners-up in the MSSN Melaka. Norazam represented the MSSN Melaka. Still on football, in the Premier School National Competition, our football team reached the finals in the southern zone. In athletics, Azizan was chosen to represent the MSSN Melaka.
MHS, past and present, has outstanding scholars and equally successful sportsmen and sportswomen. MHS is also proud to have many successful and prominent Old Boys, among whom is the former Chief Minsiter, Y.B. Datuk Abu Zahar b. Hj. Isnin, DMSM, AMN, Y.B. Johari bin Mat, DMSM, JSM, KMN, Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian Pendidikan and Y.B. Dato' Prof. Dr. Anwar bin Ali, Pengarah Jabatan Pendidikan Tinggi.
To cap it all, this year, 1997, MHS has been declared a premier school in Melaka.
