WORDS OF THE EDITOR

What is a man without a name ? Nothing. Without name, without reputation, one ceases to exist. Even figments of a delirious imagination have identity, bits of information that brings about the created entity into the reality that we live in. A name, an abode, a family perhaps. So, it is with great credibility that I assume everybody has a name. What else do you leave when you die ? Unpaid bills ?

Malacca High School is a school of reputation. Of a name you might say. A premier school, an institute of education that surpasses all with its unbeatable credentials. Best academic results, remarkable showmanship in co-curricular events, all example of a school deemed to be the best. Undeniably true yet not entirely so. Allow me to shed light into my created darkness.

What define the best ? Is a straight 'A' student necessarily the best student ? Is a world-class laboratory significant to producing a world-class scientist ? Who is the best teacher ? One who brings about a Nobel winner out of a class of fifty or one who creates fifty average working men ? Ponder on you answer and ponder when I say my answer is no. Clear cut with no strings attached.

Malacca High School is a better school, a school that offers a student greater facilities, good academic standing and an overall conducive environment to pursue further one's formal education. However, the one thing Malacca High School is definitely not is that of being the best for there does not exist such connotations in the arena of education. Humility is a trail of an educated person, only the brash and arrogant shout of their unfounded strengths and misguided beliefs. As someone once quoted, ' nobody listens to another shout when all around exists the voices of barbarians, but a whisper, that the ear will strain to for it speaks not of empty loudness but of honest truth, the voice of humility and humanity. '

People learn every second of their lives. From an in-depth explanation of Darwins's theory of evolution to learning that money does fall from the sky, who is to say which is more important ? A doctor may say that his education saves lives but a mother may say that her knowledge led to the existence of the doctor. So, is there such a thing as the best form of learning ? Can education be classified into significant and otherwise ? In that sense, can there ever exist a ' best ' school ?

Malacca High School is a good school. Why ? Is it because of academic achievements ? Winnings in sports perhaps. Or maybe it is because it has good educators and good students. Indeed, the average student of Malacca High School still has much to learn like it is not civilised to scribble on walls, but on the whole, Malacca High School has good people. People that are, although occasionally misdirected but in general, trustworthy and sincere. That is the basic truth.

Life is like a box of chocolates, so says a certain famed philosopher. Why ? Because you never know what you are going to get. The future is full of uncertainties. Challenges in life comes like a sudden gale, unexpected and terrifying. Changes in life happen as often as the wind shifts directions. However, the one thing that should never change is the person living inside you. Your dreams and aspirations. Your hopes and wishes. Your love and friendship. These knowledge, beliefs, ideologies if you may, should never impart you for without them, you are without name, without a sense of self. Keep them burning like a flickering candle, diminutive it may be but in brightness it overwhelms.

We have but this one life stretched out before us. Never waste this opportunity and never abuse the gift of the living. Appreciate what you possess, do not be tempted to greed and the ways of the inhumane. And never live life selfishly. All these are examples of education. A disciple that is so undermined yet so utterly important. Learn these traits from people, your teachers, your friends, your family, and share your knowledge with an open heart and soul. It is on this note that I make a close and dream optimistic dreams of the future. Give thought to the words of Victor Hugo, "Common sense is in spite of, not the result of education." May God bless us all.
