Malacca High School Laboratory Assistant
Interview with Mr Aloysius S.
On the 17th September 1991, we had an interview with him, a dedicated long serving staff of the Malacca High School who served as a laboratory assistant. The interview was conducted at the school canteen at approximately 1220 hours. Below is a brief account of the interview.
Q: Since when did you start working in the Malacca High School ?
A: I started working in the Malacca High School in 1953.
Q: Is this your first job ?
A: No. This is in fact my second job. My first job was with the Municipal Council. It was a temporary job and I was filling someone's place. When there was a vacancy in MHS, I started working here instead.
Q: How do you find the job ?
A: It is quite a nice job. It is not too tough and not too busy. I am mostly busy during the science practical examinations. Then I will have to prepare the various equipments and also to clean them thoroughly.
Q: All throughout the years, was there any unpleasant incidents happened while working on experiments ?
A: As far as I can remember, there were no such incidents whatsoever except the common breaking of glass equipments by careless handling.
Q: Do any of the teachers find any problem with the way you manage the laboratory ?
A: No, as I know the laboratory inside-out, I know what the teachers need and in fact, we are all in friendly terms.
Q. What changes have there been to the school since the very first time you started working until today ?
A: Oh ! There has been quite a number of changes to the school especially during Mr. Rajan's time. The present library was formerly used as a hall. It was converted into a library. Also, during those earlier days, the roads were all red earth roads. With the help of the JKR, we managed to tar the roads. In fact, the road to the left of the main gate leading to the office was initially lined with palm trees. The windows in the main building was also modified. They were initially door-like windows and were replaced by shutters. The Physics Laboratory One was formerly a canteen. In fact, the tables being used currently are all canteen tables. Later, the canteen was re-located to the present 'koperasi' premises. One of the two Physics laboratory was formerly a General Science Laboratory. Also, the present Chemistry Laboratory is in fact two laboratories combined into one. One of the two Laboratories was a Biology Laboratory. For the Biology Laboratory, the tables have been changed from the ordinary wooden tables to the mica tables.
